There are lots of tips and methods out there telling people how to lose weight. Some are good, some are bad. What is more important initially is the will of the individual to want to lose the weight. Think about your motives. Are you trying to regain control of your health? Or are you just doing it to ‘look better’? The truth is, diets are notoriously bad at helping to lead healthy and fulfilling lives, and have been shown to actually encourage weight-gain. In order to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you don’t need a diet, but a new approach to food and exercise.
Guilt has a lot to do with weight gain. As harsh as it sounds, you aren’t perfect, so it is quite acceptable to fall of the wagon now and again. The critical thing, though, is that you don’t let yourself give up- just keep going. You should accept the fact that you probably didn’t make the best decision, but rather than crumbling, learn from the mistake, find out what led you to it, and move on. A great way to look at weight loss is to not make perfect decisions all the time, but trying to make the right decision more times than not.
There are ways you limit temptation. For instance, try to avoid situations where you would be tempted to opt for the pavlova rather than the fruit salad. Everybody is affected by their appetite throughout the day, and there can be times when you are more likely to overeat than others. As a result, you should try to plan your time in such a way that you aren’t able to constantly think about food. If you’re really committed and determined, it may even help to be able to work out what your triggers are and learn how to deal with them. Of course, you should always ensure that you maintain a health and well-rounded diet, and never skip meals.
When you start out, you should take the time to look at the type of food you’re buying. Go to your pantry or refrigerator and remove any high-fat, processed food. Restock them with healthy options, lots of vegetables and fruit, and treats that are much less processed- this will help your body to digest them easier. What’s more, many people don’t realise that that feeling of constant hunger- even if you’re overweight- is actually a sign that your body is not receiving the nutrients it requires. Therefore, a rumbling stomach is not necessarily a sign that you haven’t eaten anything, rather that you haven’t supplied your body with the right vitamins and minerals. Switching the chocolate bar for a piece of fruit will give you the same sweetness you crave, but will also give you the nutrients that your body needs.
For more information about the type of foods and exercise you should factor into your daily routine, consult your local doctor or weight loss team. For people whose weight has become a serious medical problem, weight loss surgery may be the only option.
